Homeschooling in Faith: A Single Mom’s Story of Trust and Transformation
Share
For many single mothers, the decision to homeschool emerges from a deep desire to provide a nurturing, flexible, and values-driven education for their children. My own journey into homeschooling was born from a moment of crisis—and, looking back, a blessing in disguise.
When COVID struck, my son was enrolled in a very expensive private school. I had always wanted to give him the best education possible, and at first, it seemed that the school would deliver on that promise. But only a month before the pandemic hit, I was informed, much to my shock and disappointment, that my son was failing and would not be promoted to second grade. As someone who had struggled in school as a child, I was determined that my son would have a different experience. I acted quickly, hiring a private tutor and arranging for extra help from the school to make sure he caught up.
Then, suddenly, the world changed. COVID arrived—God’s blessing in disguise, though it didn’t seem like it at first. The school, like so many others, moved to remote learning. Students would check in each day, but the real responsibility of education fell to the parents. As those first days passed, I saw something shift in my son. His natural curiosity awakened; he wanted to learn more, explore more, be more creative than the school’s limited structure allowed. I embraced this new opportunity, designing our own “theme days” filled with crafts, presentations, and hands-on projects. Every day became an adventure in learning. By the end of that school year, my son had not only caught up—he was reading at a third-grade level after just three months.
As summer arrived, I wrestled with the decision of whether to send him back to that private school. I had already paid a significant deposit, but my heart felt unsettled. God was gently guiding me to something new. In the end, I walked away from the school, and that very night, I was filled with a peace I hadn’t felt all summer. We never really stopped schooling that summer—our days naturally flowed from one lesson and adventure to the next. When fall arrived, it was clear: we would continue homeschooling, now with Field Trip Fridays and an even greater sense of freedom.
Six years later, I am deeply grateful for the path we’ve taken and for God’s guidance every step of the way. Homeschooling as a single mother can be daunting; I often wondered how I would manage both teaching and providing for my family. When you are the only parent making every decision, doubt can creep in. But ultimately, I remind myself that my child belongs to God—I am here to guide and nurture, and trust that He will provide, lead, and make all things possible. Whatever your reason, know that the seeds of this decision are planted in love, and love—fortified with faith and determination—can move mountains.
